How-To Guide
Checklist for School Organizers
  1. Contact the site administrator at the school where are volunteering to assist you with planning for NetDay and coordinating activities and resources.

  2. Develop a plan for generating publicity and gathering volunteers and sponsorships for your school.

  3. Work closely with school officials on developing a technology plan. If the plan will be carried out in phases, clearly identify which parts of the school will be wired as resources and volunteers become available. Keep records on conversations, on meetings, and for a log of purchases.

  4. Conduct a site survey with the site administrator, the technician, and if possible with the school or district facilities manager or engineer.

  5. Assist the technician as necessary to complete the wiring plan and make other preparations for the technical work on NetDay (see Checklist for Technicians for details).

  6. Find a sponsor and determine if a NetDay wiring kit should be ordered.

  7. Recruit volunteers to help execute your wiring plan in one day, recruit more through traditional communication routes: Make announcements at PTA meetings, pin notes to kids, or put a notice in the school newsletter.

  8. Hold a volunteer meeting with the technician, so that you can assess volunteer skills and divide them into teams, or assign other tasks.

On NetDay, have all of the necessary components ready:

  • NetDay wiring kit,
  • wiring tools,
  • volunteers, including the technician,
  • Designate a room for an orientation meeting on the morning of NetDay,
  • Set up a sign-in desk and a command post, and;
  • post signs pointing to the restrooms.
  • Have all volunteers sign in on the sign-in sheet. Have them sign a waiver form if required. Have people using tools sign them out and sign them back in before they leave for the day.
  • Record your progress in your school's NetDay diary on the Web site - throughout the day, if possible - or assign a volunteer to do it.
  • Thank volunteers for their efforts, update them on the school's progress, and let them know when you need help on other projects.
